Anna–
1. I am a huge Nickelback fan and that song says it all so perfectly. The video is really poignant too.
2. I agree with you totally!! We are not perfect. We try. We try our best. Life is so hustle and bustle and the small things get forgotten–our kids.
I do what I can to let them know I’m there. Pin up school artwork when it comes in, put dates on all schoolwork when I get it back, we have Friday night dinner out every week (pizza, burgers, etc.), we go to special places the kids request.
I take pictures of everything, so they can look back and see where they’ve been.
We try to make the things we do as a family, a part of their memories, that they may hopefully remember them with fondness and do them later, when they’re adults.
The here and now is so important.
There was a book, “Real Moments” by Barbra DeAngelis that gave me insight into life and gave me my childlike innocence.
I love the book becuase it reminds me to pay attention–especially to the little things.

A very sensitive post, and I might add the “being present” with those you love — especially as they grow older and you listen with all your heart — can yield great, great dividends down the line.

Over time trust just continues to be built and reinforced, advice is sought when needed, and the relationship keeps being strengthened.

Thank you all for your fantastic energy and input to this post! Living in the present is something I believe we have to remind ourselves about, and develop the awareness that we can in fact stop and focus on what we are doing right now. It takes practice… but just to remind ourselves now and then, does make a difference and it gets easier and easier…

I think it was Eckhart Tolle who said that living in the NOW is like when you are planning for a vacation. You are planning something that will occur in the future, AND living in the moment is when you focus and experience the planning fully right now and you are not already mentally on your vacation. Does that make sense?

Anna,

What an amazing post! I am a mother of two who is guilty of not being in the moment with my kids….trying to send out that email, make that phone call, or even finish cooking. When instead I can more constructively schedule time for email and phone calls, and invite my children to help me prepare meals.

I really appreciate all of the insights you share, especially that kids don’t remember the presents we give, but the presence we give. I love that!

You’ve given me much to re-evaluate. And I loved the song and video you shared. I’ll be visiting your site often as I believe I have a lot I can learn from you. Thank you.
